Sanskrit Week

Each year, a Sanskrit week is held in January, at which students can spend an extended period engaging with this most enchanting and ancient language. The week caters both for beginners and those with more advanced experience of the language. This week-long event includes guest speakers from Australia and abroad.

This event has been held in Australia each year since the early 1990s, and is modelled on the very successful Sanskrit Weeks run by our sister schools in London and elsewhere.

The event is open to all School of Philosophy students who have been on a week-long Philosophy residential previously and are meditating.

Sanskrit Residential Week
30th Anniversary

The 2020 Australasian Sanskrit Week will be held in Sydney from Saturday 4th to Sunday 12th January, 2020.

Early bird fee:    $550  (payment made by 30 November 2019)
Standard fee:    $600  (payment made from 1 December 2019)

The Early Bird rate will be ending on 30 November for the 30th Annual Sanskrit Week at Mahratta in Sydney from the afternoon of 4 January until the morning of 12 January 2020.

Our guest tutor will be the Revd. Dr Stephen Peter Thompson M.Phil. Ph.D. Dip Min. FRAS. After obtaining degrees in Sociology and Theology, Stephen completed a four year degree in Sanskrit at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London, followed by an MPhil and PhD at the Centre for Advanced Sanskrit Studies at the University of Poona.

The Sanskrit Residential Week offers an ideal opportunity for quiet study and simple measure. The main focus for this week is a passage from the Aitareya Upaniá¹£ad which we will chant, discuss, study in depth and reflect on. In this way we hope to experience directly the truth of Advaita Vedanta.

There will also be meditation, morning chanting, the grammar of Panini, and electives related to Sanskrit. All students follow a simple daily programme which includes participating in servicing the kitchen and the house. This event is open to meditating students 18 years and over and who have attended at least one weekend residential held by the School of Practical Philosophy.

When: 4-12 January 2020 | Where: Mahratta, 25 Fox Valley Rd, Wahroonga

Auckland will be hosting the 31st annual Australasian Sanskrit Week from 4pm Sunday 27th December 2020 to 9am Sunday 3rd January 2021.
