Philosophy and …
“Philosophy and…” is a rolling program of presentations and short courses from 1 to 4 weeks in duration. These presentations and short courses are open to the general public and no prior learning or experience is required to attend.
The aim of this program is to explore a range of diverse topics in order to see how a philosophical perspective may lead to a deeper appreciation of them. Insights will be drawn from many of the world's great wisdom and literary traditions as well as contemporary thinkers. An emphasis will be placed on the presentation of ideas and material for consideration alongside discussion and experiential exercises wherever possible.
The presentations will take place between 10.30am-12.00pm on Sunday mornings at McLaren Hall on the grounds of the Erasmus School in 40 Lisson Grove, Hawthorn (enter car park from Through St).
The "Philosophy and..." sessions run for an 8 week season three times a year. Participants can pay a pro-rata rate of $20 per week (e.g. a 3 week course would cost $60) or have a "Philosophy and..." season pass enabling you to attend any or all of the sessions for the whole season for $100. Those wishing to purchase a season pass can do so either online (by completing the payment form to the right of this page), by contacting the office, or by paying at the door. Payments for individual sessions can only be made at the door.

| February 12 | Health 1: Mind-body Medicine | Craig Hassed | That the mind affects the body is not a new concept but the modern science of mind-body medicine is providing a fascinating confirmation of what the ancient wisdom traditions have long since understood. This interactive presentation will explore the science, practice and philosophy of mind-body medicine. Topics will include stress and its impact upon health, psychoneuroimmunology (how the mind affects immunity), neuroplasticity (how thought and behaviour affects the brain) and the role of mind-body medicine in the management of illnesses such as depression, cancer and heart disease. |
| February 19 | Health 2: Mindfulness | Craig Hassed | Mindfulness meditation is a method of training attention. Such practices have been central to the world’s spiritual and wisdom traditions for millennia but in the modern world these practices are being scientifically studied for their ability to improve mental and physical health, to change brain structure and function, to enhance performance, and to foster the qualities associated with effective leadership. This practical and experiential workshop will explore the science and applications of mindfulness-based practices. |
| February 26 | The Gayatri Mantra | Robert Udovicich | This workshop will be a journey exploring the ‘primordial sound of creation’ according to the ancient Vedic philosophical tradition of India. The vehicle for the exploration will be the Gayatri Mantra; the most revered prayer from the Indian tradition. The Gayatri has been described as ‘having the power of 1000 nuclear bombs’. One famous singer performed the mantra in all 200 performances of her farewell concert tour. A renowned scientist said that the Gayatri should be carved on the door of every science laboratory. It has influenced people like Gandhi and Einstein and may even have contributed to the federation of Australia. The presentation will combine theory with practical interactivity and discussion. Singing experience is not required. |

No artistic experience or talent is necessary! The format for the session will include: |

This will assist us in understanding what we all have in common as we move towards unity. Topics that will be addressed and discussed include: |
| April 15 | Health 3: a Philosopher's Take on Genetics | Craig Hassed | Some would say that the biggest breakthrough in science in the last half century has been the mapping and deciphering of the genetic code. This interactive workshop will explore some of the basic principles in genetics from both scientific and philosophical perspectives. Particular emphasis will be given to the emerging field of epigentics which examines how the mind, lifestyle and environment impact upon how our genes express themselves and the implications for staying well or recovering from illness. |
| April 22 | Keeping your head: meeting adversity | Chris Hutchins | “If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs…” So begins Rudyard Kipling’s famous poem, ‘If’ which gives advice on facing adversity. What is adversity? What are the many forms it takes in our daily lives? Can it be avoided? Or do we simply need to be able to meet it head on? Join in a discussion using the poem ‘If’ as our guide. |
