Lifestyle & Culture Lectures
The Lifestyle & Culture Lecture Series presents unique and exciting talks that explore issues of health and well-being, the arts and society, and the quest for happiness and self-knowledge.
The Series is an initiative of a group of students from the School of Philosophy, with the aim of sharing some of the wonderful topics explored in the School with a wider audience, and to introduce high-quality speakers from Australia and abroad who inspire audiences with their passion and experience.
The Direct Experience of Reality: are we awake or in a dream?
By Mr David Horan
Can philosophy lead us from the unreal to the real rather than merely filling our heads with more words?
Can the guidance of Plato and Plotinus turn our gaze away from the world of shadows and mere appearances to the light of the true and the unchanging?
This lecture will explore these questions and will also present a numer of short practical exercises which may help us to transform the words of the great and inspiring philosophic teachings into direct experience.
About the Presenter
David Horan is a senior member of the Dublin School of Philosophy and, in conjunction with Irish universities, he has organized the public “Day With Plato” event for the past 21 years, introducing thousands of people to the works of Plato.
He has produced film versions of three of Plato’s dialogues and live dramatisations of numerous others. David has run Plato Study Weeks since 2004 in Ireland, Italy and Melbourne, and has lectured extensively on the dialogues in England and Holland.
He has been conducting group tours to Greece for 12 years, combining the study of Plato with visits to the sites of the ancient world. In 2009, he led a two-week seminar on Plato’s Timaeus in Delphi, Greece.
He is currently producing a new translation of the Complete Dialogues of Plato. This work is being undertaken at the Centre for the Study of the Platonic Tradition in Trinity College, Dublin.
"I really enjoyed the style of the presenter, easy to listen to with clear diction."
"I was invigorated, stimulated and it re-ignited a desire to pursue, to enquire further."
